Saginaw Bay Walleye Club History

A few fishermen wanting to improve the walleye fishery in the Saginaw Bay and surrounding waters decided to start the Saginaw Bay Walleye Club. The organization was started in 1982 and the first president was elected in 1983.

The club members worked with the DNR to the provide the manpower and monies for the pond operation and fingerling harvest. As more fishermen heard of the club and what it was trying to accomplish they joined to put this effort into operation. As of this date the Saginaw Bay Walleye Club has raised over $55,000 for the operation of the reading ponds. The Michigan Walleye Tour is now the main fundraiser for this project.

A meeting is held once a month for the members to learn of new methods to fish for walleye, new products that are on the market, and fishermen sharing with other fishermen up-to-date fishing reports. Also, a monthly newsletter is sent to all the members to inform them of some of the things that they might have missed by not attending the meeting.

As the club established The Herb Steih Memorial Scholarship to provide funding for graduate students who are dedicated to the betterment of the walleye fishery through improved walleye habitat and reproduction.

The club is always ready to help with kids fishing contests, provide prizes and volunteers when needed. If you are looking for a club and want to make new friends and are a fishermen or want to be a fishermen the Saginaw Walleye Club will provide that for you.

The Saginaw Bay Walleye Club is a federally recognized
not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, and recognized for
tax-deductible giving by the federal government.
